Shreveport--LSU/Ochsner Cancer Suvivorship Group

  • LSU/Ochsner Shreveport Feist-Weiller 1501 Kings Highway Shreveport, LA, 71103 United States (map)

Sound meditation can be a deeply calming and healing practice for cancer survivors.

What is sound meditation?: For this sound meditation I will be using various sound healing instruments, such as Tibetan Singing Bowls, Chimes, Alchemy Crystal Bowls and perhaps a frame drum to induce a state of deep relaxation and meditation. The sounds are soothing, harmonious, and calming thus helping to quiet the mind chatter we all have as well as promote a sense of peace within your mind and body.

Benefits for cancer survivors:

  • Stress reduction: Cancer survivors often experience high levels of stress and anxiety related to their diagnosis, treatment, and recovery process. Sound meditation can help to reduce stress levels, allowing survivors to relax more deeply and cope better with their emotions.

  • Pain management: Chronic pain is a common issue for many cancer survivors, whether from the cancer itself or from the side effects of treatment. Sound meditation can be an effective tool for managing pain by promoting relaxation and releasing tension in the body.

  • Improved sleep: Sleep disturbances are common among cancer survivors, which can further exacerbate other symptoms and decrease overall quality of life. Sound meditation can help to promote better sleep by calming the mind and body, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep.

  • How to practice: Participants typically lie down or sit comfortably in a quiet space, close their eyes, and focus their attention on the sounds being played. The goal is to let go of thoughts and distractions, allowing the sounds to wash over you and bring you into a state of deep relaxation. Helping to quiet the “mind chatter” and calm the nervous system thus deepening your breath and lowering your heart rate.

  • Overall, sound meditation can be a valuable complementary therapy for cancer survivors, helping to support their physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being on their journey to recovery. It's important for survivors to explore different modalities and find what works best for them in conjunction with their medical treatment and care plan.
